Birdwatching and wildlife tour (9 days – 8 nights)

This 9-days trip features the visit to the rain forest in the northern mountains, the fascinating and exotic San Juan River area in the southern border to Costa Rica; the dry forest of Montibelli Reserve for a day, and a couple days in Granada to explore the city and the green Mombacho volcano and Lake Nicaragua with its small islands “Isletas”. Pace is quite fast with a lot of moving around, and accommodations are rustic except in Granada city.

Today you will be transferred north to reach the highlands in Matagalpa, home to the best coffee in the country! On the way enjoy impressive views of the mountain range and stop to visit “El Castillo del Cacao”, an artisanal chocolate factory run by Dutch partners where we will learn about the castle project and taste the chocolate first-hand made! Continue to la Bastilla Ecolodge enjoying panoramic views of Apanas Lake along the way.
Please note you may have to walk a few minutes the last section between the coffee plant and the lodge (1/4 mile) as the trail is too stepped for a minibus.

Spend the day discovering this property. One of the following tours is included: A guided walk in the reserve (up to 3 hours); a guided tour of to learn the sustainability process of the hotel and a bird watching tour. Optional tours (Not included in the rates) such as a horse ride in the reserve, coffee tour among others can be arranged.

 Solentiname – Los Guatuzos Nature ReserveDay 5: Solentiname – Los Guatuzos Nature Reserve

Early in the morning, get ready for an excursion to Los Guatuzos Nature Reserve. This RAMSAY reserve of wetlands and rain forest is considered the cradle of life for the lake, thanks to its importance as a bird nesting site and critical links in the area’s complex ecological chain. By private boat spot the many different species of birds, river turtles and with some luck crocodiles! In company of your local expert visit and hike in the reserve and admire the rich flora and fauna of this unique place.

 Solentiname – San Carlos – Managua – Managua Airport – Chocoyero – MontibelliDay 6: Solentiname – San Carlos – Managua – Managua Airport – Chocoyero – Montibelli

Morning public boat back to San Carlos. Our representative will take you the airstrip and board your flight back to Managua. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your next destination: Montibelli Private Natural Reserve.
On the way to Montibelli, stop to visit Chocoyero Nature Reserve, lying on Managua’s sierra and covered with tropical dry forest. Here, you will observe a waterfall and the parakeets (Chocoyos) coming to nest each sunset after spending the day in the crater of the Masaya Volcano and its surrounding.

 Montibelli Nature Reserve – Granada CityDay 7: Montibelli Nature Reserve – Granada City

Granada City – Mombacho Nature Reserve – Kayaking on Lake NicaraguaDay 8: Granada City – Mombacho Nature Reserve – Kayaking on Lake Nicaragua

Today, you will go for a great outdoor adventure. First, visit Mombacho volcano which has been extinct for many years now and is totally covered with vegetation. A powerful truck will drive all the way to the top of the volcano. We will go through coffee plantations to the cloud forest and will hike around one of the volcanoes’ 3 craters, along the “Crater” trail (around 1h30 hike). On the way, enjoy impressive views of the city of Granada, Masaya smoking volcano, Lake Nicaragua and the Islands.
Later, we will transfer you to Lake Nicaragua to enjoy lunch in a typical restaurant in front of the water. After lunch, go kayaking on the Lake to discover some of the rich flora and fauna of the Isletas. You will be able to observe some of the many species of tropical birds that live in the islands, the local “Isleños” fishing with the majestic Mombacho volcano in the background.
