This trip is an adventure to a lesser traveled Nicaragua. First, the north of the country and rural, indigenous communities. Later, fly to the Caribbean Coast to immerse in the Miskito and Garifuna cultures. Then, visit the San Juan River, its extensive nature and history, followed by a quick stop at Ometepe Island and a 2-days stay in Granada at the end of the trip. Lots of travel (ground, air and water) is involved in this trip.

Day 1: Managua Airport – Managua City
On your arrival at the International Airport in Managua, you will be transferred to your hotel with the complementary shuttle bus. Overnight at Hotel Camino Real 3* sup. Meals: –
In the morning, you will go for a guided visit of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua since 1852. The city has had a turbulent history due wars and natural disasters and nowadays is in constant changes. Visit places such as Loma de Tiscapa, historical site hosting the ruins of Somoza’s Palace, the National Palace, the old cathedral and the Mercado Huembes, a very huge popular market offering all kind of goods. The city tour is completed with a visit to the open-air museum Huellas de Acahualinca, hosting footprints left more than 6,000 years ago, one of the oldest indications of human presence in Nicaragua. Following your tour, continue north to the mountainous region Matagalpa and its fresh weather, home of famous coffee plantations. Make a quick visit of Matagalpa with your driver and then overnight at Hotel Selva Negra 2*. Meals: B
Morning pick up at your Lodge to visit the indigenous community of “El Chile”, located east of Matagalpa. On this tour, we visit the workshop of a group of women fabric weavers where we will see the production process as well as the different products they make such as: bags, purses and backpacks (You may buy handicrafts on-site). Walk in the community and see other groups of artisans also producing fabrics with ancient techniques. Take a hike (30 minutes) up to the “El Chile” hill with its 360-degree view of all the surrounding mountains. A typical lunch will be enjoyed at one of the ladies’ houses who will give you an inside look at their way of life.
Overnight at Hotel Selva Negra. Meals: B-L
Breakfast and transfer to Managua airport to take a domestic flight to Bluefields, home to descendants of Garifunas and Miskitos. Arrive at the airport in Bluefields; you will be introduced to the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua by your local guide. Then, transfer to the docks and take a 1-hour public boat trip to Pearl Lagoon. Check-in at your hotel and enjoy some free time. Note: Private boats are also available at extra cost. Accommodation at your Hotel Best View Inn 1* in Laguna de Perlas. Meals: B-D
Today, get closer to the different Miskito & Garifuna communities of Pearl Lagoon. First, reach by boat Orinoco Garifunas community. Upon arrival to this area, a Garifuna Punta dance will be performed just before lunch as part of the welcome gesture to the visitors. After the dance, enjoy seasonal fresh seafood. The tour continues with a visit to the community cultural attractions, including Garifuna culture bearers of the town. Then, departure for the Kahkabila Miskito community. Enjoy a tour un the community by a local Miskito guide learning about the way of life of the locals. In late afternoon, enjoy a panga ride back to Laguna de Perlas, followed by a dinner of fresh seafood and great Caribbean style reggae music. Night at Hotel Best View Inn. Meals: B-L-D
Today, you will be transferred to airstrip to take the flight back to Managua Airport. Upon arrival you will be met by your driver and transferred by land to San Carlos, From San Carlos docks we will get you in the public boat (pre-booked) that navigates in the San Juan River. Arrival & check-in at your Hotel Victoria 1* (Rustic). Meals: B-D/p>
Today go to explore all nature that the southeast of the country has to offer. We’ll navigate in the San Juan River until reaching Indio Maiz Reserve, where we will go for a hike following the Bartola River. During this visit, you will be able to observe a vast variety of monkeys and an enormous diversity of migrating birds. On the way back to the hotel, stop in El Castillo Village for an early lunch. Then, visit the El Castillo Fortress, which was built by the Spaniards to protect the city of Granada from the English pirates; even the famous Lord Nelson tried to conquer it. Overnight at your Hotel Victoria. Meals: B-L-D
Return by public boat to San Carlos Docks and then reach the airstrip by taxi. Board a domestic flight to Ometepe Island, the world’s highest lake island. Once in the airstrip, our local driver will meet you and take to your hotel. Eventually arrive & check in at your Hotel San Juan de La Isla 2* sup. Meals: B

Today you will visit the main sites of Ometepe in company of your local bilingual guide. Visit places such as “El Ceibo” museum, the Green Puddles lagoon in Charco Verde Reserve. Admire the Petroglyphs at Finca el Porvenir, found on the lower slopes of Madera’s volcano on Ometepe, still bearing the ornate carvings of the first indigenous settlers of Nicaragua. In Santo Domingo beach, you will enjoy lunch. Later, go to el Ojo de Agua a natural pool of clear water supplied by a river that originates from Conception Volcano. In the late afternoon, take the ferry back to mainland and continue to Granada, the jewel of Nicaraguan cities. Arrival & check-in at your Hotel Patio del Malinche 2* sup. Meals: B-L
Breakfast and transfer to Mombacho Reserve, an extinct volcano totally covered with vegetation. A powerful truck will drive all the way to the top of the volcano. We will go through coffee plantations to the cloud forest and will hike around one of the volcanoes’ 3 craters, along the “Crater” trail (around 1h30 hike). On the way, enjoy impressive views of the city of Granada, Masaya smoking volcano, Lake Nicaragua and the Islands. In the afternoon, enjoy a city tour of Granada. Visit the city’s main landmarks such as The San Francisco Convent, La Polvora, Central park and enjoy 360-degree views from Iglesia La Merced’s tower. During the tour enjoy a ride in a traditional horse-drawn carriage which will make you feel as you were in the old colonial times!
