Natural and historical Nicaragua (9 days – 8 nights)

This 9-days trip starts discovering Ometepe Island with a short visit of Granada on the way. From Ometepe, fly to the San Juan River, and navigate down the river (198 kms/120 miles) all the way to San Juan del Norte where the river meets the Caribbean Sea, with lots of adventure and sightseeing on the way. Pace is quite fast and accommodations vary from rustic to comfortable along the way.

On your arrival at the International Airport in Managua, you will be transferred to your hotel with the complementary shuttle service. Overnight at Hotel Camino Real 3* sup. Meals: –

Managua City – Visit Granada Colonial City – Ometepe IslandDay 2: Managua City – Visit Granada Colonial City – Ometepe Island

Morning transfer to San Jorge and stop on the way to visit Granada, the jewel of the Nicaraguan cities where you will enjoy a City Tour. In Granada you will visit the city’s main landmarks such as The San Francisco Convent, La Polvora, Central park and enjoy 360-degree views from Iglesia La Merced’s tower. Your guide will point out more areas of interest and speak about the colorful history of Granada. Also enjoy a ride in a traditional horse-drawn carriage which will make you feel as you were in the old colonial times! Then, take the road back and reach San Jorge to take the ferry to Ometepe Island. Upon arrival our local driver will pick you up and transfer you to your Hotel San Juan de La Isla 2* sup. Meals: B

Ometepe Island TourDay 3: Ometepe Island Tour

Today you will visit the main sites of Ometepe in company of your local bilingual guide. Visit places such as “El Ceibo” museum, the Green Puddles lagoon in Charco Verde Reserve with great views of Volcano Conception. In Santo Domingo beach, you will enjoy lunch. Later, go to el Ojo de Agua a natural pool of clear water supplied by a river that originates from Conception Volcano. The journey continues with a kayaking tour in Rio Istian, one of the best places to spot birds on Ometepe, located right between the island of the Maderas Volcano, and the one of the Concepción Volcano. Quietly paddling down the beautiful waterways is definitely relaxing by itself with great views of mighty Maderas Volcano and the even taller, active Concepción Volcano. Spot as many birds as possible in this pristine natural setting.

Ometepe Island – San Carlos – El Castillo Day 4: Ometepe Island – San Carlos – El Castillo

Today, we transfer you to the airstrip where you will board a domestic flight to San Carlos in Rio San Juan. Upon arrival, we transfer you to the docks where you will take a public boat that navigates on the calm waters of the San Juan River. One hour and thirty minutes later, you will arrive to El Castillo. Dinner and night at your Hotel Victoria 1* (Rustic). Meals: B-D
Note: The flight to San Carlos is only available on Thursday and Sunday!

El Castillo –Indio Maiz Reserve – El Castillo FortressDay 5: El Castillo –Indio Maiz Reserve – El Castillo Fortress

Today go to explore all nature that the southeast of the country has to offer. We’ll navigate in the San Juan River until reaching Indio Maiz Reserve, where we will go for a hike following the Bartola River. During this visit, you will be able to observe a vast variety of monkeys and an enormous diversity of migrating birds. On the way back to the hotel, stop in El Castillo Village for an early lunch. Then, visit the El Castillo Fortress, which was built by the Spaniards to protect the city of Granada from the English pirates; even the famous Lord Nelson tried to conquer it. El Castillo – San Juan del NorteDay 6: El Castillo – San Juan del Norte

Today, you will take a public boat (pre-booked) to San Juan del Norte, a place that will captivate you for its nature and history. Arrival & check-in at Rio Indio Lodge 4*. Meals: B-D

 San Juan del NorteDay 7: San Juan del Norte

Day at leisure at The Rio Indio lodge. The Lodge puts together a perfect balance between comfort and adventure. Just minutes away from the border of Nicaragua and Costa Rica and to the south of this lost paradise is located in the Corn River National Park, a vast area steeped with history, pristine jungles and wildlife and some of the best fishing places imaginable.
One of the following tours is included in the rates: Tour to the Cemetery of Grey Town, Tour the town of San Juan de Nicaragua, a night tour and a Tour on the River.

San Juan del Norte – Managua Airport – Managua CityDay 8: San Juan del Norte – Managua Airport – Managua City

Today you will be transferred to the airstrip (a short boat ride), board your domestic flight to Managua City. Upon arrival our driver will pick you up and transfer to your hotel in Managua.

Antigua CatedralDay 9: Managua City – Managua Airport

Today you will be transferred to Managua Airport to take your flight back home. An extension to the beach or another destination is available. Please consult with us!
