Nature tour Nicaragua – Costa Rica (9 days – 8 nights)
This nature/adventure trip includes a few days in Nicaragua, first in Granada with tours to cloud forest and Lake Nicaragua, then visit to Ometepe Island, and to the San Juan river area, a lesser known and more laid back area of Nicaragua. From there transfer to Arenal/la Fortuna area through los Chiles for a couple days; at the end, transfer to San Jose with visit to extravagant la Paz waterfall and gardens and Poas volcano & national park. Pace is quite fast although activities level is moderate/gentle.
On your arrival at the International Airport in Managua, our driver will be waiting for you to transfer directly to Granada, the jewel of Nicaraguan cities! After settling in, the rest of the day is free for you to relax at your hotel or visit the city on your own.
After breakfast you will be transferred to small port in Lake Nicaragua to enjoy a full day in a private Island.
See the most beautiful islands in Lake Nicaragua and their rich flora and fauna, discover some of the 356 islands “Isletas”, a must see! Covered with lush, tropical vegetation, some of them are inhabited by natives, others have vacation houses built on them, and others are still deserted. Enjoy lunch there and have time at leisure before being transferred back in the late afternoon.
Today departure toward south on the Panamerican Highway until reaching San Jorge. En route stop top visit Mombacho volcano, the defining feature of the Granada skylight. On an gentle hike enjoy the permanent cloud forest of the reserve and may even enjoy superb views of Granada and Lake Nicaragua if weather permits. On arrival in San Jorge board a ferry to volcanic Ometepe Island. Arrival and transfer to your hotel.
Breakfast and departure to visit this fabulous Island. Visit a natural reserve with a lagoon, El Ceibo museum, probably the best archeological and numismatic museums of Nicaragua and Ojo de Agua, a pool of natural waters perfect for a dip! Then, board a local flight to San Carlos enjoying idyllic views of the landscape. On arrival transfer to docks and public boat to El Castillo. Note: Flight to San Carlos is only available on Thursday and Sunday.
Today go exploring all nature that the southeast of the country has to offer. We’ll navigate in the San Juan River until we reach Indio Maiz Reserve, where we will go for a hike following the Bartola River. During this visit, you will be able to observe a vast variety of monkeys and an enormous diversity of migrating birds. Return to the town to visit the El Castillo Fortress, which was built by the Spaniards to protect the city of Granada from the English pirates; even the famous Lord Nelson tried to conquer it.
Breakfast and morning transfer by public boat to San Carlos. After completing immigration formalities continue navigating by boat in the waters of Rio Frio to Los Chiles, border station to Costa Rica. On arrival we transfer you to La Fortuna region, overlooked by the impressive Arenal volcano.
Morning transfer to El Castillo located in the north shore of Arenal volcano. You will visit the serpentarium, a very interesting reptile’s refuge where you will observe all varieties of snakes, frogs, tarantulas, turtles, fishes (tilapias), a caiman and more. Very educative! In the afternoon, enjoy a walk in the Arenal hanging bridges enjoying the primary rainforest from a birds eye view of the iconic Arenal volcano.
Breakfast and transfer south to take a tour around the Central Valley and then reach San Jose. Reach La Paz Waterfall Gardens and take a tour there. As you arrive to La Paz, walk through a trail, leading to a spectacular waterfall in the middle of the rainforest. Inside the park we will also visit the hummingbird gallery, the serpentarium, the bird house, the butterfly garden and the frog’s exhibit. As you ascend the terrain and near the Poás Volcano we will see coffee plantations. Reach the Poás Volcano where we will not only admire the impressive main crater with its sulfur fumaroles, but also learn about the different ecosystems in this unique and protected national park.
