Rustic Adventure (12 days – 11 nights)

An authentic adventure trip in less traveled destinations. Discover Nicaragua’s wildlife and beautiful nature, different climates and natural environments; immerse in the Colonial heritage before ending your trip at the beach. A self-drive trip, but we can drive too if you prefer. Trip pace is moderate.

  • Rental car vehicle from day 2 to day 7 and from 9 until day 12 including mandatory insurance, pick up/drop off charges and taxes.

Day 1: Managua Airport – Managua

On your arrival at the International airport in Managua, you will be transferred to the Hotel Camino Real (3* sup) in Managua by the complementary shuttle vehicle. Meals: –

Day 2: Managua – Leon City – Juan Venado wildlife reserve

Today meet your Rent-a-Car agent for proper documentation. Then you will be delivered your 4×4 and being your adventure by driving northwest to Leon City. Accommodation at your hotel.
In the afternoon, your guide will pick you up at the hotel for the Juan Venado Excursion. Go with an expert guide to the coastal estuary wildlife refuge of Juan Venado. You will also be able to observe iguanas, crocodiles and different species of birds in this mangrove forest and barrier island (Duration 4 ½ hours approx.). After your tour you will return to your Hotel Flor de Sarta 2* sup. Meals: B

Leon – EstelíDay 3: Leon – Estelí

Morning at leisure to visit the city. Leon is one of the liveliest cities in the country with many churches (The biggest Cathedral in Central America), interesting museums and street art. Later, driver to the northern area of the country, Estelí. On the way you may stop to visit San Jacinto and its boiling muds “Hervideros”. Arrive in Estelí. If time allows it, we recommend you to visit the city and the local cigar factories. Night at your Hotel Los Arcos 2*. Meals: B

Estelí – Matagalpa, Selva Negra – Sustainability Tour in the property – Selva NegraDay 4:  Estelí – Somoto Canyon – Estelí City

Drive in the morning to enjoy an adventure in a unique place a unique place! Drive north to Somoto Canyon, one of oldest rock formations in Central America. With a unique scenario, the canyon is truly an impressive site where you will live an adventure. Walk and swim in the canyon with walls 250 meters high and 4 meters wide. The tour includes a rowing boat ride along the river that runs through the canyon. Lunch will be taken in one of the communities living in the area. Night in Esteli at Hotel Los Arcos. Meals: B-L

Matagalpa, Selva Negra – Sustainability Tour in the property – Selva Negra Day 5: Estelí Matagalpa, Selva Negra – Sustainability Tour in the property – Selva Negra

Morning at leisure in Estelí. Optional tours such as hike in Miraflor Reserve, Visit Tisey-Estanzuela, cigar factories and plantations tours, can be arranged. Please ask for more information!
Leave Estelí, drive to the mountainous region of Matagalpa, home of famous coffee plantations. Arrival and check-in at Hotel Selva Negra mountain Lodge. Later take a Sustainability Tour in the area to learn the different process of the Farm. Visit the workers’ village, barns and farm animals, the laboratory where their own organic weed and pest controls are made. Night at your Hotel Selva Negra 2*. Meals: B

Matagalpa – Optional Los Chiles CommunityDay 6: Matagalpa – Optional Los Chiles Community

Day at leisure. You may go hiking in the property or take a tour to visit a local, indigenous community:

The indigenous community of “El Chile” is located east of Matagalpa and is rich in history and culture. On this tour, we visit the workshop of a group of women fabric weavers where we will see the production process as well as the different products they make such as: bags, purses and backpacks (You may buy handicrafts on-site). Walk in the community and see other groups of artisans also producing fabrics with ancient techniques. Take a hike (30 minutes) up to the “El Chile” hill with its 360-degree view of all the surrounding mountains. A typical lunch will be enjoyed at one of the ladies’ houses who will give you an inside look at their way of life.

Selva Negra Matagalpa – San Benito – San Carlos – El Castillo, Rio San JuanDay 7: Selva Negra Matagalpa – San Benito – San Carlos – El Castillo, Rio San Juan

Following breakfast, leave Selva Negra and drive on the road passing Sebaco. Then, take direction toward San Benito to continue your way to San Carlos in Rio San Juan. Upon arrival in San Carlos’s docks, drop your car off at the port. One of our representatives will get you in a public boat that navigates in the river. One hour and thirty minutes later, you will arrive at El Castillo. Arrival & check-in at your Hotel Victoria 1* (Rustic). Meals: B-D

Rio San Juan – Indio Maíz Reserve – El Castillo Fortress – El Castillo, San Juan RiverDay 8: Rio San Juan – Indio Maíz Reserve – El Castillo Fortress – El Castillo, San Juan River

Today go to explore all nature that the southeast of the country has to offer. We’ll navigate in the San Juan River until reaching Indio Maiz Reserve, where we will go for a hike following the Bartola River. During this visit, you will be able to observe a vast variety of monkeys and an enormous diversity of migrating birds. On the way back to the hotel, stop in El Castillo Village for an early lunch. Then, visit the El Castillo Fortress, which was built by the Spaniards to protect the city of Granada from the English pirates; even the famous Lord Nelson tried to conquer it. Today you will return by boat to San Carlos docks and then, pick up your car and drive to Granada, the jewel of Nicaraguan Cities! Arrival & Check-in at your Hotel Patio del Malinche 2* sup. Meals: B

Granada – San Juan del Sur Day 10: Granada – San Juan del Sur

Morning at leisure to relax and visit this beautiful colonial city. You may also take a tour of Lake Nicaragua and the islands “Isletas”, by boat or kayak or visit the cloud forest reserve of Mombacho volcano. Please inquiry for more information! Later, continue south to the Pacific Ocean to San Juan del Sur, a small and very nice typical fishermen port located at the south west of Nicaragua. Arrival and Check-in at your Hotel La Posada Azul 3*. Meals: B

Days at leisure in San Juan del Sur to enjoy the sun and waves of the Pacific Ocean. Although a growing town, it still remains as a beautiful fishing village. Optional activities (not included) are available such as horseback riding along the coast, sailing tours, zip line…

San Juan del Sur – Managua AirportDay 12: San Juan del Sur – Managua Airport

Today leave San Juan and continue your way to Managua. Approximate driving time 2h15mn. Deliver your rental car in the Car Rental Company counter in Managua Airport. Take your flight back to your country or to your next destination.
