Active family adventure and beaches (13 days – 12 nights)

A great family adventure that starts in less traveled areas (Las Peñitas – Juan Venado, then Matagalpa and the mountains area), then leads you to hikes, kayaking, zip lining and horseback riding in and around Granada and Ometepe Island. At the end of the trip spend a couple days at Nicaragua’s best Ecolodge, Morgan’s Rock (We can include a different lodge if required). A good physical condition is required but there are no long or extreme hikes.


  • Overnight at mentioned hotels or similar.
  • Transportation as stated on the itinerary (Days 1, 2, 3 and from day 5 to day 10 and days 12). Shuttle transfer on day 13. Transportation in Ometepe Island will be locally operated.

Arrival in ManaguaDay 1: Arrival in Managua

On your arrival at the international airport in Managua, you will be transferred by shuttle bus to your Hotel Camino Real (3* sup) for overnight. Meals: –

Managua –Leon City – Juan Venado Natural Reserve – Leon CityDay 2: Managua –Leon City

Morning transfer to Leon, by our driver and bilingual guide. Stop along the way to taste a delicious “Quesillo”, a local dish. Arrive in Leon and check-at your centrally located hotel. In the afternoon, we take you to the coastal estuary wildlife refuge of Juan Venado; here you will navigate the brackish waters of the reserve in a motorboat to observe numerous wading birds like as well as iguanas, crocodiles and other wildlife that inhabit this mangrove forest and barrier island. (Duration 4 ½ hours approx.). After your tour you will return to your Hotel Flor de Sarta 2* sup. Meals: B

Early morning transfer east to discover one of Nicaragua’s monsters: Cerro Negro active volcano. Hike to the top (Less than 1-h) and enjoy overwhelming views once you reach the active crater, sulfur coming out from many places and views to neighbouring volcanoes such Telica, Momotombo, Pilas-El Hoyo, as well as the Pacific Ocean, 20 miles away complete the experience. Later, visit San Jacinto village located between 2 volcanoes and hosting the “Hervideros”, geysers whose vapor with 300°C leaves the entrails of the ground permanently. The journey continues to the mountainous region of Matagalpa, home of famous coffee plantations. Arrival and check-in at Hotel Selva Negra 2*. Meals: B

Selva Negra - Optional toursDay 4: Selva Negra –       

Days at leisure to interact with nature in this beautiful mountain Lodge. The following tours are optional and can be arranged by us. Please inquiry for more information. Overnight at Hotel Selva Negra. Meals: B

**Sustainability tour (about two hours): Learn the different process that makes Selva Negra a pioneer in self-sustainability. Visit the workers’ village, barns and farm animals, the laboratory where their own organic weed and pest controls are made.

** Los Chiles Community: Visit the indigenous community of “El Chile” and see women fabric weavers where we will see the production process and may even buy handicrafts on-site. Additionally, take a 30 min hike and enjoy 360-degree view of all the surrounding mountains. A typical lunch will be enjoyed at one of the ladies’ houses who will give you an inside look at their way of life.

Today, leave the highlands and continue to Granada, the jewel of Nicaraguan cities. On the way visit Masaya area. First, visit the Masaya volcano National Park and its very active and fuming crater (currently hosting a lava lake!). Take a peek into the crater and observe this unique natural phenomena! You can also visit the Museum that offer interesting history and legends. Only a short distance is Masaya’s fine the Handicraft Market, where you can enjoy the creativity from local artisans and may even purchase souvenirs at reasonable prices. The cultural experience continues with a visit to the typical White Villages: Enjoy panoramic views of Apoyo Lagoon, Granada and Lake Nicaragua; later take part of creating beautifully handmade souvenirs with a local family. Granada – Islander for the day Day 6: Granada – Islander for the day     

Today, travel by boat to a well-preserved private island (with more than 6000 sq. meters of luxurious vegetation) with a unique natural environment, incredible views of Mombacho Volcano and access to the calm waters of Asese bay. Enjoy a day stay in the island and its amenities such as kayaks and swimming in the Lake. Lunch included. When returning to Granada in the evening you have the chance to enjoy a breathtaking sunset on Lake Nicaragua!

Mombacho Natural Reserve – Zip Line (Canopy) - Granada City Tour Day 7: Mombacho Natural Reserve – Zip Line (Canopy) – Granada City Tour 

Breakfast and time to enjoy a great outdoor experience! Visit Mombacho, a 1400 meters high volcano. A powerful truck will drive all the way to the top of the volcano. We will go through coffee plantations, which offers exceptional sites to discover its flora and fauna. From the top hike 1h30 around one of the craters with different boasting incredible views to the crater, Granada, and the Islets of Lake Nicaragua. Following your hike, continue your adventure with a Canopy Tour. This tour offers you an unforgettable experience sliding down from tree to tree through several platforms and bridges very safely built, overlooking the coffee plantations. Back in Granada, visit the city’s main landmarks such as The San Francisco Convent, La Polvora, Central park and enjoy 360-degree views from Iglesia La Merced’s tower. Your guide will point out more areas of interest and speak about the colorful history of Granada and more during a typical horse-drawn carriage.

 Granada – San Jorge Port – Ometepe IslandDay 8: Granada – San Jorge Port – Ometepe Island

Breakfast and transfer to San Jorge to take the ferry to Ometepe Island. Upon arrival our local driver will pick you up and transfer you to your hotel visiting this fabulous island on the way. Visit places such as the Green Puddles lagoon in Charco Verde Reserve with great views of Volcano Conception. Also visit Finca Magdalena, one of the oldest farms in the island and perfect for a coffee stop! In Santo Domingo beach, you will enjoy lunch. Later, go to el Ojo de Agua a natural pool of clear water supplied by a river that originates from Conception Volcano.

Ometepe – San Ramon Waterfalls – Horseback riding TourDay 9: Ometepe – San Ramon Waterfalls – Horseback riding Tour

Early morning transfer in company of your local guide to the south of the island to visit the San Ramon waterfall. Start your hike on the slopes of the volcano listening to the sounds of nature (howler monkeys). As you approach the waterfall, you will see wildlife on the trail; birds, butterflies and monkeys. Once you reach the waterfall, you may eve enjoy a refreshing bath in the cool waters! Then, transfer back to your hotel, driving along the coastal road. In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxing horseback riding. Amidst virgin trails full of life, a spectacular and unique natural scenery will be revealed to your eyes. Do not miss the chance to visit “El Ceibo” the best archaeological and numismatic museum of Nicaragua.

Ometepe – San Jorge – Morgan´s Rock Day 10: Ometepe – San Jorge – Morgan´s Rock

After breakfast in your hotel, you will be transferred to the docks, board a ferry to the main land. Transfer to Playa Ocotal hosting Morgan’s Rock Hotel, an exceptional high-end resort part of an extensive reforestation project and a private nature reserve that host a diversity of forest west. Do not miss the experience of crossing the 100 meters’ suspension bridge overlooking the ocean. Arrive and Check in at Morgan´s Rock Ecolodge 4*. Meals: B-D

Days at leisure in Morgan’s Rock! Many exciting and diverse eco-adventures can be booked through Morgan’s Rock: Kayak in the Estuary, bike in the forest, go horseback riding or visit the beach!
