This tour includes unique, less traveled and “rustic” areas with extensive and untouched nature. You will also meet locals who still live in a traditional way, far away from the modern world. Enjoy a couple well deserved days at the beach at the end! Although different hikes are involved they are moderate. No strenuous day.

Wait in the lobby of your hotel to be transferred northern to the highlands of Matagalpa. You will feel the difference in climate as you approach the city and will also enjoy impressive views of the mountain range. Upon arrival in Matagalpa, enjoy a tour in the city to get to know the culture, socio-economical activities, traditions and daily life of the “Matagalpinos” (people from Matagalpa). Visit the museum of Carlos Fonseca, the coffee museum among other places. Then, continue to your mountain hotel: Selva Negra. In the afternoon enjoy a guided walk in one of the trails of the Lodge to get in touch with nature!

Selva Negra – Arenal Reserve – EsteliDay 3: Selva Negra – Arenal Reserve – Esteli

Today is all about nature in this beautiful region! With your local guide start a 3-hours walk from your lodge passing by ancient trees and listening to the sounds of nature (howler monkeys and birds) through the foggy forest until reaching El Arenal reserve. This reserve is located between Matagalpa and Jinotega, a dense cloud forest home to a variety of flora and fauna, such as orchids, bromeliads. With some luck observe different species of exotic birds, including hummingbirds, bell birds and try to spot the elusive Quetzal. After this nature walk, you will continue to overnight in Estelí.

Esteli – Miraflor Reserve – EsteliDay 4: Esteli – Miraflor Reserve – Esteli

Today, go with a local bilingual guide to the mysterious cloud forest of Miraflor Reserve, a unique natural reserve located about 1h30 driving away from the city of Estelí. The park measures 254 km² and there are three different climates on the zone: dry, intermediate and humid. In addition to the areas of untouched nature, Miraflor is also inhabited by farmers who grow crops and raise cattle. Many species of wild orquids grow there and can be observed in one of the several trails of the reserve.

In the morning, you’ll visit a cigar factory, an interesting visit since Estelí is known for producing some of the world’s best brands of cigars. On this tour, you will you will see the entire process of the factories from tobacco plants growing and how they are harvested to men and women selecting, cutting, rolling, and packing the cigars. Then, leave the highlands and get on the road until reaching Chocoyero/El Brujo Natural Reserve, which lies between Managua and Masaya. On the way to the reserve observe many fields with pineapple, coffee, and banana plantations. We take a walk in one of the trails to observe “chocoyos”, green parakeets that all nest right next to a waterfall. Leave the reserve and overnight at Montibelli private reserve 1* (Rustic). Montibelli Reserve – Birdwatching Tour – San Juan del SurDay 6: Montibelli Reserve – Birdwatching Tour – San Juan del Sur

Early morning wake up to enjoy a birdwatching tour in the reserve. With your local guide enjoy and appreciate the songs, shapes and colors of more than 168 species of birds such as woodpeckers, hummingbirds, parrots and Motmots (the National bird). Later, leave Montibelli and continue to the Pacific Coast via Granada, the most beautiful of Nicaraguan cities! Enjoy a short visit to the oldest settlement of the Americas with its cobblestone streets, neo-classical colonial buildings and friendly people. Arrival and overnight in San Juan del Sur.
